The Standard Poodle is a unique breed. Breed historians believe the Standard Poodle is descended from a water retriever in Germany known as the pudel. The word poodle most likely came from the German pudel or pudelin, which means splash in the water. There is also belief that the poodle is a direct descendent of the Water Dog of England and also the Irish Water Spaniel.

The Poodle gained national attention in a hunting and later, as circus dog because of their intelligence. Out of the three varieties of poodles the toy, Miniature, and Standard, the Standard Poodle is the oldest of the three.

The Poodle has developed a reputation for its distinct coat and hairstyles. Because of their intelligence and the fact they do not shed they are becoming a large part in new breeds coming out. Like the Labradoodles and Goldendoodles.

The Poodle ancestors were know as hardworking water dogs, retrieving and accompanying their hunter-masters in the field, and were good at what they did. Now they are more as a companion.

The first American Kennel Club official standard for the Poodle was approved in 1901. It has had many revisions over the years. The Kennel Club in England wrote its revision in 1886. All three varieties of the Poodle existed then but they were not distinguished by their height but by weight.

The Standard Poodle is known for his elegant in appearance and also his intelligent and alert expression.

Hello,

Yesterday I took my two Standard Poodles running and I noticed something I thought was funny. They where happy to go as normal. Mostly they have their head out he window smelling the fresh air. But last night when we went I grabbed a hamburger and they did not care about the fresh air outside this time. They both laid in the back seat watching me with my food. You guest it I could not eat it with out giving them some. So we ate the burger and once they noticed it was all gone they had their head out the window.

They are pros at begging.

I will stud my standard poodles out for a small fee give me a call.

We are about to take our standard poodles for a walk. Oz has been really wild the last few days because it has been two hot out side to do anything. It finally cooled off today. Casper is laid back and only gets excited if I start talking about going on walk.

You should have your standard poodle exams at least once per year. This goes for all house pets. It is important for your pet to be examined by a veterinarian. Because animals will age approximately seven times faster than we do, a lot can change for them in one year.

Sometimes these changes are obvious to pet owners because they are physical or behavioral in nature. In other cases, these changes may be subtle. Regardless, when a pet is seen by our veterinarians for an annual exam, we will assess your pet from nose to tail, making sure we address your questions and discuss the physical exam findings.

In some cases, blood work or other routine tests may be recommended to ensure that your pet is healthy. Vaccine boosters may also be administered during the annual exam if your pet is declared healthy enough to receive them.

Lastly, because federal law mandates an annual exam to maintain prescriptions, it is important to understand that we cannot dispense medications without examining your pet at least once per year.

Help! My Pet is Vomiting!

for animals that have been vomiting for
several days, or, if there is evidence of
ingestion of either toxins or foreign
material, we recommend an evaluation by
one of our veterinarians right away. Blood
work and x-rays are some of the initial
diagnostics that may be recommended for
your pet.

If your pet has just started to vomit
however, and it is otherwise action fine,
oftentimes we will recommend fasting
them(i.e. withholding food and water) for
12 hours. If the vomiting subsides during
that time period then we suggest offering a
bland diet to your pet. This consists of
boiled hamburger (or chicken) mixed with
white rice fed in small, frequent meals.

If the vomiting does not subside during the
12 hour period, or, if your pet begins to vomit
the bland diet, then you will need to schedule
an appointment for them.

I have had two wonderful Standards for 4 years and they are great
Family pets. I was just on the blog site and I saw a woman say that
female poodles are very calm and reserved but I disagree. It’s not only
the female standards it’s also male. My poodle Casper is very calm and
reserved as well as loving and soft. But I do agree that some males
are crazy our other Standard Oz is crazy always trying to get
attention and in everyone’s face. really to tell you the truth I think
It’s just that all standards have their own personality.

Poodles are great house dogs as well as watch dogs and even hunting
partners. Standards don't shed hair so I never have to worry about
hair all over my clothes and house. They also learn very quickly and
are extremely smart. They are great watch dogs, if anyone’s walking
on the street and there in the house they still go to the window and
bark it’s like they have super sonic hearing. But then if someone comes
in the house and they bark we just say go lay down and they listen.
A hunter would love to have a standard poodle. The modern breed
emerged in France, where it performed in circuses and worked as
a duck retriever. Which, to me is funny, because we have a duck and both
dogs are scared of him.

They may also be used in show. Standard poodles win the majority of
shows held by AKC, and that means you get money. One may use males
as studs or females to sell pure bread pups from 300-1000 dollars.
one can see that standard poodles are great for many reasons. My dogs
are currently being used as studs and are looking for girlfriends' so

Hello,

It has been a few week since I posted to this blog. We went out of town for a internet workshop last week and now just getting back to everything.

My son took care of my standard poodles when we where gone. They where happy to see my wife and I when we got home.

I can believe how fast their fur grows. I need to shave them up again. I have never took them to a groomer but am thinking about doing it. I went a got a price on a fluff and buff on them. They get 65.00 for a standard poodle. I did not think that was bad at all. That includes wash, ears cleaned, shave like I want, and toe nails trimmed. I think I am going to do it.

I am thinking about doing a new video with my two standard poodles so keep a look out for that.

We took them running last night after it cooled off. I has been really hot here in Minnesota this year and no rain. Fills like I am in Texas again.

Standard Poodles - The People Pleaser

I did a lot of research before getting another dog after our English Cockers passed away. I was attracted to Standard Poodles because of their intelligence, temperament and ease of training. They are known to be good family dogs as well as a good watchdog. They also seem to get along very well with other animals as well, sometimes even to the point of being protective of smaller animals.

I have the honor of being owned by three Standard Poodles at the moment, Meg, Bob, and Charley. All three of them have excellent personalities, although they are three totally different personalities.

There is a misconception that females make a better pet and have better personalities, which I too thought was the case at first! Meg, our female Poodle, is very calm, reserved and dignified. She is very loving, but on her own terms. She also tends to be somewhat stubborn at times! Sometimes she acts like, “I can’t be bothered doing that!”

Our males, Bob and Charley, are real clowns! They are more exuberant and want to play all the time. They are more of a “get in your face” type of dog, always looking for attention and affection.

Our Standard Poodles have excellent temperaments and seem to get along with everyone, kids and adults. My husband and I have made it a point to start socializing them at a very early age, to get them used to people, places, sounds and riding in the car.

Whenever there is a festival or outdoor event in town, we always take them and they are always a big hit. Everyone wants to pet them, take pictures and ask us all about them. They love the attention! They’re not afraid of crowds or loud noises.

They seem to be able to read your body language and emotions and I swear they can tell when you are sad or happy and react accordingly! When I’m sad, they come and put their head on my lap and look at me with those big sad eyes! When I’m happy, they jump around smiling and wagging their pompom tails.

They can also be quite humorous at times as well. Our male Bob’s favorite spot is sleeping on the couch (not a good thing I know), but Meg and Charley were already on the couch. He looked at them as if to say, “Hey, that’s my spot,” and thought about climbing in between them for a moment. He then looked at a small 16 x 16 inch pillow that Charley had thrown off the couch and decided to try and lay down on it. Now this is a 75 pound large male poodle! He went round and round in circles on top of this pillow and finally tried to curl up in a ball on top of the pillow. It was hilarious!

The Standard Poodle temperament is that of a people pleaser. They will go out of their way to make their humans happy. They generally bond to everyone in their human family instead of one person exclusively.

As long as you have a sense of humor and don’t mind a dog that outsmarts you once in a while, a Standard Poodle may be a good choice for you!

Hello,

For the last few day my standard poodles and I have been going to the storage area and running. Okay, they have been running while I drive the car. I keep saying that I am going to start to run them in the morning with the bikes. I will make that my next video. We have trailers on our bikes so when we go on a long bike ride with our standard poodles they can get in the trailer and rest. They really like to take a brake and when they are rested up they wine, so we let them out. The vet has told us only to run them a few miles at once. I am going to give them their weekly bath.

So will post again in a few days.

Hello,

I just gave my standard poodles their weekly bath. It just blows me away the way they listen. I have had many dogs in the past that would run or fight when they knew it was bath time.

Today I got everything by the bathtub all I said was come on Oz and he walked right into the tub. Just said it one time also. Then when it was Casper's turn I said Casper get in the tub he walk right in also. I love it when they listen.

I am about to take my poodles running. I want to go on a motorcycle ride with the wife later today.

My standard poodles are AKC registered Poodles. They live in Minnesota and are looking to be a couple of Stud Dogs.

Did not get to do much with the standard poodles oz and casper today. Yesterday I took them runing at the storage site. It is about a 40 to 50 acer storage lot. I recorded them and am going to edit a video. When I have it done I will post it on this blog.

We were gone today until 9:00 tonight that is why the standard poodles did not have much to do today. I plan to run them in the morning, maybe on a bike ride.

Hello,

I am just droping another line about my standard poodles. When I got home today Casper was being really laod, when I let him out he ran to the back door and started barking again. I let him out ant he ran off of the deck fast, he must of had to go really bad. I am glad that he waited until I got home. He has left me a suprise in his kennal before that was not a nice welcome home suprise either.

My two stud poodles here in minnesota and I laid on the dinner room floor for a while and wreslted for a while. My wife and I are going to take our poodles running tonight.

Hello,

Today I did not have much time to spend with my two standard poodles here in minnesota. I was tired from working out in the sun all day. When I got home the stub dogs where out on the deck jumping around waiting for me to come and say hi.

When my poodles act like I am the world and can wait to visit with me I can not just leave them. I walk over and opened the door for them to come and viist with me. We laid on the kitchen floor for a while.

I would love to stub these two standard poodles of mine. But on the other hand I worry about the other problems that male standard poodles get when they are not cut. So I am not sure how much longer until we get them cut.

Hello,

Today I got my two standard poodles in the bath tub for their weekly bath. Here is a example of how well they listen. I had oz get in the bath tub and realized I had left the walmart bag in my car and the dog shampoo was in it. I told him to stay. When I went out side to get the shampoo a friend came by. Next thing I knew it had been about 10 minuntes later and I remebered that oz was in the bath tub. I came in the house and he was still sitting there. Poodles listen very well. I have read that when your standard poodle is 4 years old that they are as smart as a two year old child.

We took our poodles for about a mile walk tonight. Got some energy out of them. Before we went on our walk oz and I sat out front on the bench by the water pond and waited on my wife and casper.

Poodles Got Lucky Today.

Today my standard poodles where suppose to have their weekly bath. But we had family from out of town come over today. So the go luckly today not tommarow though. I give my poodles a bath once a week. They don't like it much but do very well in the tub. They actually get in the tub when I tell them to and turn 180 degrees when I say turn. It is nice when they don't have much fur because I can give them a bath in 1/2 the time.

The poodles did not get much excersise today either. Just played fetch for a while. Now they both are crashed on the floor by my feet.

These two Standard Poodles are great dogs and are ready to be stud poodles. They are in great health and both have great show line blood.

Today I got home and I did the same thing as everyday. I let my standard poodles out side. They where back up on the deck fast waiting to come back into the a/c. When I let them in Oz got all crazy on me and started to bite my feet. Next thing I knew we were wrestling. About five minutes later I was out of breathe so I got a plastic bag out and chased them around the house for a few more minutes and then I was really tired. They still wanted to play. But I just laid on the floor with my poodles for a while.

When I got up I went down stairs and the poodles followed me. Then oz started to egg me on again by biting at my feet again. Then in another five minutes I was laying on the floor with Oz and Casper again.

Later after dinner and it cooled off outside. My wife and I took the Poodles to the storage area and let them run free in the fenced area while we walked about a mile, they where ready to get in the car and go home.

Make sure that you give your dog some exercise at least a few times a week hopefully more. This will help when it comes to you wanting them to listen. Mainly because they have burned off some energy and are a little comer.

I never thought I would have a poodle. Now I don't think I will never want a different kind of dog. My poodles are the smartest dogs I have ever been around. They know a lot of keywords and listen very well.

I live in a house that has a very small yard so they do not have enough room to run. So my wife and I do a lot of bike rides with them. We just happen to have a bike trail at the end of our block. We also take them to a place where we have our motorhome. We drive the storage lot and they run. They love it better then a bike ride. If we don't run them they get full of energy and at nuts in the house.

The poodle is one of the most popular dog breeds kept as a pet today. They are extremely intelligent which makes them one of the most trainable breeds. Poodles also love to be around people and make extraordinary pets.

The origin of the poodle is not really known. It is unclear whether it was developed in Germany, France, the ancient Piedmont, or Denmark. However, France is the country that is recognized as the poodle's origin. The poodle is a descendant of a French water dog called the Barbet and the Hungarian Water Hound. The word "poodle" comes from the German word "pudel". Pudel means "one who plays in the water". Poodles were originally kept in France and Germany to retrieve waterfowl. Later, the French made the Poodle a circus performer because of their intelligence. The Poodle has been around for at least 400 years.

There are three different types of poodles: Standard Poodles, Miniature Poodles and Toy Poodles. The toy poodle became very popular with royalty in the 1700s. The only thing different about the three types of poodles is size. The Standard Poodle weighs around 45 pounds. The Miniature Poodle weights around fifteen pounds and the Toy Poodle weighs around seven pounds.

The Poodle is most well known for its intelligence, but it is also a very pleasant, perky, lively and happy breed. Poodles are very trainable and love to be with people as well as other pets and dogs. They are sometimes shy around strangers though. Poodles do tend to bark a lot, but you can train them not to do this. They also don't need excessive exercise. You don't have to have a yard to own this dog. Poodles love walks and will be much healthier if you take them on short walks.

When you get your poodle, make sure you socialize it at a very young age to prevent behavioral problems. You should also start training at a young age. Some poodles can be timid or high-strung if you don't do this. Poodles are not recommended for small children because they may snap if they are teased by children. It is better if your children are older and more considerate.

Some poodles tend to get runny eyes, ear infections, digestive problems, heart problems, skin problems and slipped stifle. Make sure you take your dog to the vet regularly to prevent any problems from developing.

The hardest part of keeping a poodle is the grooming you will have to do. They must be given a bath regularly and clipped at least every two months. You will also need to check and clean the ears a lot so that they don't get ear infections. Any hairs that grow in the ear canal must be pulled out. Poodles' teeth also need scaling regularly. If you have allergies, this breed will be good for you because they don't shed hardly anything.

If you decide to get a poodle, you will have a great companion. They can live to be twelve to fifteen years old and make a delightful, amusing pet. Just make sure you know that they can be demanding as well.

- Healthy animal fatty that is easily digestible and easily metabolized as a source of energy. Poultry such as chicken or turkey have more unsaturated fatty acids and are more suitable for dogs.

- Vegetable oils, such as soybean oil, lecithin corn oil, wheat germ oil, sesame seed oil or linseed oil all contain high levels of linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid for dogs.

- Carbohydrates is another important nutrient. Sources of carbohydrates can be found in rice, oatmeal, corn or wheat. These are easily digested when properly cooked.

- Fibre, a complex carbohydrate is essential for proper digestion and stool formation. Beet pulp, tomato promace, rice, soy hulls, oat hulls, and wheat bran are good sources of fibre.

- Vitamin and mineral is an absolute nutritional necessity for dogs. Although the vitamins and minerals make up less than 2% of the total food by weight, they provide some of the most crucial nutrients. These include 12 to 16 vitamins and 15 to 25 minerals.

Nationwide Dog Food Recall.

At a time when the nationwide recall of dog food by Menu Foods, causing at least 100 private lable and major dog food brands to be pulled form store shelves, the topic of dog nutrition and dog health are flooding the news.

Menu and other manufacturers such as Purina have recalled dog food that has been determined by laboratory testing to have contaminants that can be fatal to your dog.

Some of the reported contaminants have been aminopterin, a rat poison and melamine, a chemical used in the production of plastics and fertilizers.

As a long time advocate of natural and healthy dog care alternatives I was interested in the title of this book, The Healthy Wholistic Dog, and when I learned that the author would be speaking at a Barnes and Noble in my town I jumped in the car to hear first hand what he had to say.
Mr Harvey touched on a number of topics and inter acted with the audience on a variety of dog heath care issues such as the impact of toxins on our dogs health, what is in commercial dog food, alternative therapies, vitamins and supplements.

What struck me most was the absolute impact of the ingredients that are found in commercial dog food on the health and longevity of our dogs. In the book, the author references a quote from a veterinarian who said to paraphrase him - Most animal illnesses would go away if they were not fed commercial pet food.

On pg 27, the author points out that commercial dog food may contain ingredients as unsavory as hooves, hide, horn, hair, organs, entrail, blood and bone. And how about toxins, hormones, steroids and cancer ! This is just a sampling of the ingredients that the author tells us are present in meat by products that are found in commercial dog food.

The chapter on dog cancer was an eye opener. Today, the author tells us, approximately 25% of dogs will have cancer at some time and about 50% of senior dogs will die of cancer. The correlation between diet and dog health became clear as I continued my reading. Two of the major causes are believed to be dog vaccinations and the dog food we feed our dogs.

Other topics equally compelling are addressed in this book such as dog allergies, with a direct relationship to dog diet and allergies. Mr Harvey also provides important information on areas such as dog arthritis, dog ear problems, dog immunology, vitamins for your dog, dog, and dog diabetes to mention some.

I was impressed by the chapter on dog kidney problems. Renal or kidney failure is the problem that has been killing dogs that have eaten the tainted food which is part of the ever expanding dog food recall.

This book is 189 pages long of straightforward and helpful information, tips and guidance on how to keep your dog healthy and maximizing her lifespan.

While there are many good resources available on holistic dog care I think this is one of the best. Every dog guardian should have a library of information as a refence to help solve problems as they arise.

Having met the author was certainly fun. Having read the book more than once has been enlightening and has greatly added to my knowledge of dog care, dog health and dog nutrition. I highly recommend reading it.

Standard Poodles are great pets.

If you are looking for a house dog standard poodles are good pet. They do not shed. They are very smart. I read that when a standard poodle is 4 years old it is as smart as a 2 year old kid. I know that my two standard poodles listen very good. They know a lot of key words.
